Burgenklettersteig Etappe 2 Oberburg Via ferrata with kids Manderscheid Germany

Is the Burgenklettersteig doable with children? Ist der Burgenklettersteig mit Kindern machbar? • On the 1th of November 2022, the weather was perfect for a new via ferrata adventure. We headed to the brand new via ferrata trail ‘Burgenklettersteig’ in Manderscheid (Eifel region – Germany), constructed along the river Lieser and around/between the two castle ruins of the village. As safety is our number 1 priority, a single C/D section in the first etappe (Etappe Lieser) and some C/D-D sections in the third etappe (Etappe Niederburg) made us decide to limit us to the short Etappe 2 ‘Oberburg’ (Difficulty C), as we were not 100% sure if we could safely guide our youngest daughter (7) across these sections. A huge rescue action was already ongoing, but we didn’t have the intention to provide the rescue workers with additional work. So, as always with via ferratas, do your homework thoroughly and make informed choices at the level of your ability, so you don't get stuck. • The slope of the Etappe ‘Oberburg’ is almost vertical (video 0:14-0:48). Our two oldest kids managed to climb the rock without encountering large difficulties. For young and small children, such as our youngest daughter, quite some guidance and strength of the companion is needed to get them over the crucial rock section (bottleneck in video: 0:30-0:45). So, when climbing this section with young kids, be aware to always use a climbing rope in addition to the standard via ferrata equipment (simultaneous progression) to prevent kids from falling, and make a good assessment of your own strength to provide your child with the necessary upward support. • After the climb to the Oberburg, we went to the viewpoint Kaisertempelchen, which is the end of Etappe 3 and from where you have a great view on the via ferrata bridge.
