RMS Lusitania was sunk by the German u-boat U-20 on 7 May 1915. Lusitania was one of the few passenger liners that had continued operating commercially across the Atlantic during the First World War. Its sinking and the tragic loss of life sparked outrage around the world, and particularly in the United States, who entered the war two years later. U-20 was operating under Germany's policy of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare, but this controversial campaign was soon halted.
