Anemonoides blanda the Grecian Windflower legends and cultivation of a great early spring flower

Anemonoides blanda, previously classified as Anemone blanda and still often marketed with this old name, is commonly known as Grecian windflower, Balkan windflower or winter windflower. It is a perennial plant, growing from tubers, in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. It is a gorgeous plant with parsley-like foliage and daisy-like flowers, about 5-7 cm across, usually blue-purple but pink and white varieties are also available. The tubers need to be planted in autumn about 5-10 cm apart and 5 cm deep, in well drained soil, and full sun or partial shade. The flowers bloom in early spring and have a very light scent of honey, very pleasant and are also very attractive to insect pollinators. After blooming, the leaves will die down between late spring and early summer, when the plant enter its dormancy. It is hardy between zones 5 and 8 therefore throughout the UK and many areas with temperate climate.
