Riese (Giant) - the codename of the largest mining and construction project started and never finished in Nazi Germany - the Owl Mountains and under the Książ Castle, during the years 1943-1945. • In view of the intensifying Allied bombing raids in 1943, Nazi Germany moved a large part of their strategic armaments production to the region of the Sudeten Mountains, considered safe. Around that time, they created the project of the new Hitler's headquarters at the Książ Castle and huge bunkers and underground structures hollowed out in the Owl Mountains. • For the implementation of the project, it was decided to use forced laborers and prisoners of war, as well as prisoners of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. They hoped that in this way the time of work would be increased. • The prisoners performed a variety of jobs, depending on the needs of the companies. They worked for example with felling trees, they built roads, bridges, sewage systems, ground structures, and above all, they dug tunnels.
