Early religious scholars had a hard time defining Australian Aboriginal religions as just that (as ‘religions’, that is). Instead, they landed on the term ‘magic’. Part of the reason for this was the lack of focus on an afterlife. And part of it had to do with the increase rituals, that were spread over Australia, and through which the number of individuals of different animals that were hunted and eaten were thought to increase (hence the name). Edible plant species were also thought to be made more plentiful through these rituals. • The increase rituals were connected to totemism, so that a group (any group) would perform increase rituals for the species that were their totems. This is turn was connected to the need to maintain the ecological balance, so that the place where any given group lived would continue to produce enough food. It may be that the increase rituals were performed differently in different places, and here I discuss David Mowaljarlai’s account of totemism in the Kimberleys, and Spencer Gillen’s account of increase rituals among the Arrernte/Aranda of central Australia. #AboriginalAustralians, #AustralianAborigines, #AboriginalTribes, #AboriginalReligion, #AboriginalReligiosity, #AboriginalSpirituality, #landbased, #landfocused, #Totemism, #BaldwinSpencer, #FrankGillen, #Arrernte, #aranda, #magic, #increase, #increaseritual, #increaseceremony, #DavidMowaljarlai, #gi, #painting, #kimberley, #westernaustralia, #northernterritory,
