What are GMO Plants

This video is the second in a series about hybrid versus GMO plants. What traits exist, what species of GMO plants are grown in the United States, and how to be assured that you are not buying genetically modified seed, how to avoid cross pollination, or even where to go to actually buy it if you want to grow it are some of the topics this video covers. • One thing that might be confusing in this video is the part where I discuss the percentages of GM crops grown. The percentages are NOT percentages of the entirety of all the GM crops grown in the US, but within each individual crop. That makes more sense. It's obvious that there is more corn grown in total than cotton or sugar beets, but corn is further down the list because a smaller percentage of all the corn grown is GMO. I hope this clarifies that somewhat confusing topic. • One point I didn't make very well in my previous video is that while the insertion of the foreign gene into another organism is in itself not the same as hybridization, the modified plant can then be crossed by conventional breeding methods to create new varieties. Those new varieties follow Mendelian genetics when being crossed and back-crossed to stabilize the trait. Testing these crosses for the presence or absence of the trait is one of the things I did during my employment in the research department of a seed company that sold GMO seed. Later I was promoted to Manager of the Quality Assurance lab where we tested all the seed being produced by the company to assure that it met or exceeded government standards for germination and genetic purity. • So, why should you believe what I have to say? First of all, I am a botanist and came closer than I want to remember to finishing my Ph. D in plant cell and molecular biology. I actually did receive a masters degree and then have many years of on the job training working in biological research. In my employment I worked for a seed company as a seed technologist and hold a certification as a genetic technologist working with GMO seed. While I never actually worked a laboratory doing the actual genetic engineering and transforming cells, I did study this in graduate school, taught plant cell transformation in a cell biology lab class, and I'm probably one of just a handful of YouTube creators who have actually worked in the seed industry creating and testing GMO crops. • If you're reading this online or watching this video, obviously, you have access to a computer, can do your own research, and you should. But you should read unbiased reports and reach your own conclusions based on the research and results of the testing, and not on what someone else tells you that you should believe. • One of my favorite web sites is The Genetic Literacy Project - https://geneticliteracyproject.org/ • Another site where can learn all you could ever want to know and more about what biotech/GM events have actually been approved is the GMO Approval Database - http://www.isaaa.org/gmapprovaldatabase/ • Isolation Distances to Maintain Seed Purity • Vegetable Seed Saving Handbook • http://howtosaveseeds.com/table.php • Seed Savers' Exchange (not in table format) • https://www.seedsavers.org/isolation-... • . • . • . • . • Music - LITTLE TOMCAT and BLOOM by Josh Woodward.
