“Theory is a simplified representation of reality and a framework within which facts are not only selected but also interpreted, organized and fitted together so that they create a coherent whole”. In other words, we can say that theory necessarily simplifies reality. Theory helps us to determine what facts are important, meaningful, and relevant. Theory guides us on how to organize facts and allows us to develop a whole argument. In other words, we can also say that theory is an explanation of how “reality” works. Through theory, we are able to make predictions and make laws about the social world. Theory may explain “how things work”. One of the most important characteristics of the theory is that “Theory is not reality”. Like map represents the real world, in the same way, theory represents the real world but is not real by itself.
