By Dana Edwards • • Mary Ann Bonner takes a spin on creating a classic dish. • The 57-year-old potter came to the University of Florida as an undergraduate ceramics student, then to teach beginning and advanced pottery classes in the J. Wayne Reitz Union Arts and Crafts Center for the past 30 years. • It's a classic story, Bonner laughed. When I took my first clay class that was it. I went to grad school, mainly because I just wanted to keep making pots; it was really very silly. • The pottery instructor says her favorite part about teaching is showing the students how to throw a pot on the potter's wheel and seeing them progress each week. The students bond with Bonner and with each other. • Potters just seem very sharing, Bonner said. My classes like to have potlucks so that they can have a way to show off what they made with food in it. So, potters like to eat and share their knowledge! • When Bonner isn't teaching part-time, she works at home making pottery pieces for artisan's guilds and festivals. Bonner sells her works along the coasts of Florida and even to some places in Georgia, where she earned her master's degree. • Bonner knows people are drawn to clay, as evidence from her full pottery classes each semester. She accepts about eight to 10 students in each class, 30 percent of which are outside UF. • I'm dedicated to my students, Bonner said. I want to show them what they want or need.
