VHS stands for “Video Home System,” and it refers to a large cassette tape that could store both video and audio. These tapes were popular from the late 1970s through the 1990s, but were mostly replaced by DVDs in the early 2000s. • A VHS tape is a rectangular black plastic case containing a reel of magnetic tape inside. The video and audio were recorded on this tape, and when inserted into a VHS player (also called a VCR—Video Cassette Recorder), the machine would read the tape and display the video on a TV. You would also need to rewind or fast-forward to get to different parts of the tape, unlike digital video where you can simply skip to a scene. • To use a VHS, you’d put the tape in the VCR, press play, and watch the video as it unspooled inside. When the movie was over, you had to rewind the tape back to the beginning if you wanted to watch it again, which could take a couple of minutes. • People rented VHS tapes from video stores like Blockbuster, or bought them to keep a collection at home. It wasn’t just for movies, either—people could record TV shows and home videos using blank VHS tapes. • While VHS tapes are now obsolete, they played a huge role in home entertainment for over two decades, giving people the chance to watch movies and shows whenever they wanted, long before the days of Netflix or YouTube. • http://didyoucatchthis.com • / didyoucatchthis • / didyoucatchthis • / didyoucatchthistv • / diducatchthis • This Is How 'VHS' Tapes Were Used • • This Is How 'VHS' Tapes Were Used • #shorts
