HOW TO MAKE PINCH PLEAT CURTAINS PART 1 shows you how to prepare your curtains to make the pinch pleats. • Once pinch pleat curtains are made, the width of the curtains cannot be adjusted so we recommend choosing the type of curtain pole or track before you make your pinch pleat curtains to make sure that the finished width of the curtains can be accurately calculated. • Please see our curtain poles for standard windows http://www.polesandblinds.com/curtain... or for bay windows http://www.polesandblinds.com/bay-win... • Certain curtain poles and tracks often have an overlap arm, so if you are fitting your goblet or pinch pleat curtains to a track, it is especially important that you choose your track first so you can measure the length of the pole or track plus the extra width of curtain needed for the overlap. • • Please see our extensive range of curtain tracks http://www.polesandblinds.com/curtain... • If you are unsure about How to Measure your windows for curtains, please see our guides http://www.polesandblinds.com/curtain... if you have a standard windows. If you want to measure a bay window for curtains, please follow this link http://www.polesandblinds.com/bay-win... • Pinch Pleats headings are also known as Goblet headings, the only difference is the final stage of making the curtains. With a goblet heading, only the bottom of the pinches are sewn together. There is also another style of curtain heading known as a cartridge heading that is made the same as pinch pleats but is not sewn into any form of pinch, the folds are left literally as folds across the heading of the curtains. • HOW TO MAKE STEP 1 OF PINCH PLEAT CURTAINS. • 1. When the curtains are ready to have the pinch pleats added to the top, you will need to stiffen the top of the curtains with stiffened buckram. • 2. Buckram is a stiffened strip of material normally using the 4” depth for short curtains and 5 or 6” for long curtains. • 3. Some people prefer the iron on buckram as it will not slip around when you are trying to work with it. Others prefer not to use this type as it can create tiny bubbles in the fabric which are difficult to remove. • 3. Measure across the finished width of the curtains and then measure the same length of buckram plus an extra couple of inches at each end to fold back on itself to strengthen the side of the curtains This will also reinforce the position for the first curtain hook. All the other curtain hooks will be positioned in the pinches so will not need to be reinforced • 4. Measure and then iron the finished curtain length fold across the top of the curtains. If you are unsure of how to get to this stage, please view my How to Make Curtains video 1 https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U vide... and video 2 https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U vide... first. • 5. Place the buckram between the curtain fabric and the lining, keeping the buckram hard against the fold of the finished curtain length. Mitre the corners of the curtain fabric and then pin in place. • 6. Slip stitch lining to the curtains along the top. • 7. There are normally 4 or 5 pinches per width of fabric and 3” at each end after the last pinch. • 8. For a one width pair of curtains you would normally have 4” of flat section between the pleats and 5 to 6” for the pleats. • 9. Mark the pinches and spaces along the top of the curtains with pins. • 10.Take a pinch section, fold across pin to pin to create the pinch pleat section and then pin together. • 11. It is easier to make a section of card to the size of your pinches less the size of your machine foot and then machine down the pinned section of the pinch following the edge of the card. Stop when you feel you are at the bottom of the buckram. • 12. Back stitch the machine stitches top and bottom to ensure that the pleats are not going to undo. • 13. Run a flat section down the fold. Take a fold and push it down to create the 3 pinches. • 14. Make sure the fold of the centre pinch is over the machine line. • 15. Create the other 2 folds making sure they are equal. • 16.
