This is day two for the special rotary snow plow on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. Yesterday the snow plow and the locomotives made it to the Colorado State line. Today they will go all the way to the top of Cumbres Pass, Colorado at 10,022 ft (3,055 m). Snow was much deeper then the previous day as well as icy. The two locomotives struggled all the way up Cumbres Pass with nearly constant wheel slip. • Despite nearly every piece of equipment approaching 100 years old. It still works extremely well. A real tribute to the people who designed and built these incredible machines. The top of the pass was cold, windy, with light snow. The original plan was to have the snow plow come down the mountain for another mile or so for some more plowing. However thick ice covered the rails just beyond the crossing which could easily derail the snow plow. • The railroad decided to play it safe and head back home. One locomotive with the rail cars and caboose left first, followed by the second locomotive with the snow plow. This year is the Cumbres and Toltecs 50th anniversary. Come visit the railroad.
