There are a couple of split tools, the split element and split with gap tool. The split element does exactly what you think, it simply splits the element. You do have the option to split the element twice and have the tool remove the center of the split if you choose. Also, the split with gap tool split the element but also adds a gap with a width determined by you. Both have their uses, although I find myself using the basic split element tool the most.
