It gets its name from the way a kangaroo would hold her baby in her pouch. It's a holding technique practiced on newborns (usually preterm infants) where the baby is held skin-to-skin. There are lots of benefits to this skin-to-skin contact for both babies and parents, says Tanya Cahill, MD, a neonatologist at Cincinnati Children's. Babies have been shown to have more stable heart rates, breathing patterns and better sleep. Breastfeeding moms tend to have a better milk supply, Cahill says, and it improves the way parents bond with their baby.
