STOP Raising Chickens for Meat 3 Health Reasons

Chicken meat is the most widely-consumed protein in America. But despite the fact that we currently have around 100 chickens on our property — including 30 meat birds — I’m here to tell you why chicken isn't the optimal choice from a health perspective. • Let’s start with what chickens eat. Monogastric animals like chickens are a direct reflection of their diet. When they’re fed a diet high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly omega-6 and linoleic acid, those fats accumulate in their meat. These fats, which are prone to oxidation, can lead to increased inflammation and chronic disease in humans. Even feeding chickens fish meal only balances the omega ratio (without reducing the overall PUFA intake). • Plus, the rapid growth rate of breeds like the Cornish Cross, which reach market size in just 45 days, also poses a problem. These birds often develop poor-quality protein that our bodies struggle to digest. Furthermore, they contain fewer vitamins and minerals, making the meat less nutritious. The rapid growth also leads to health issues in the birds, resulting in meat that’s more akin to junk food than a healthy protein source. • For those looking for alternatives, slower-growing breeds like Freedom Rangers can offer a healthier option. These birds forage better, have fewer health issues, and produce meat that’s more nutritious when fed a high-quality, low-PUFA diet. However, this approach is costly and might not be economically feasible for everyone. If profitability isn’t your main concern, raising these birds can yield healthier meat for your family. • Let me know what you think in the comments section!
