From Sao Paolo, Brazil, Sergio Martins discusses the emerald gemstone history, industry and how sourcing this precious stone is performed in Brazilian mines. He explains the different types of Brazilian mining systems that exist at different locations throughout the country. The Belmont mine has a large area and conducts open pit mining on a large scale. They have consistently produced this precious gemstone for 30 years. Sergio also discusses the Nova Era mine, different from the other emerald mines because it belongs to over 140 people. Located in the area of Garimpeiro, emerald mining in this region involves miners making shafts and looking for the vein that leads to a large concentration of emerald, a “pocket”.
