In today's tasting Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, Master of Wine, David Allen reviews a wine from Gigondas, A blend primarily of Grenache Syrah from the heart of the Rhone Valley. It is a powerful heady wine that shows a surprising amount of balance. The wine concerned is Maison Lavau's 2021 Gigondas. • In the last century and a half the Lavau family has had something of a wine Odyssey. Originally from the Saint Emilion region they moved to Tunisia in the 1870s, where over a period of 90 years they built up a small vineyard to become that country's biggest wine producer. • With Tunisian independence from France coming in the early 1960s the family returned to France, settling in the Rhone Valley, in Sablet, where Jean-Guy and Anne Marie Lavau had purchased a small winery. Over a period of nearly thirty years they built their business to a level where in 1994 they bought the largest wine producer in the Vacluse region at Entrechaux. During the 1990's the couple were joined in the business by their sons Frederic and Benoit, who eventually took over its running when they retired in 2000. • Frederic and Benoit built up the business building modern new cellars and exporting under their own name. In 2009 they purchased the region's second largest cellars in Valreas. Other acquisitions included domaines in Valreas, Rasteau and Bagnol-sur-Ceze. • In 2013 the brothers merged their enterprise with that of Chateau Maucoil in Chateauneuf du Pape, sharing responsibility for running the business with brothers Benedicte Charles, the owners of that business. The merged business has over 140 hectares of vines and 3 modern winemaking facilities.
