Tsukiji Hongwanji is the Tokyo branch temple of Ryukokuzan Hongwanji, affectionately known as Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto. • Tsukiji Hongwanji started as a Betsuin (branch temple) of Nishi Hongwanji built near Asakusa in 1617, and was known as the Edo Asakusa Gobo . However, after being burnt down during the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657, the Edo shogunate granted a piece of land off the shore of Hacchobori, and due to the efforts of temple members living at Tsukuda and in 1679, the temple was built on the reclaimed land named Tsukiji , and became affectionately known as Tsukiji Gobo . At that time, the temple faced the current Tsukiji market, and there were 58 subsidiary temples, forming a jinaicho or temple town. • In 1923, the temple was destroyed once again due to the Great Kanto Earthquake, and rebuilt in 1932 in the current style that was designed by Ito Chuta. In 2014, the Hondo (Main Worship Hall), gate pillars and stone walls were designated as Important Cultural Assets by the Japanese government. • For more information: https://tsukijihongwanji.jp/global/gu... • English Newsletter: https://tsukijihongwanji.jp/news/3713/
