Born c1575, probably in Sussex, his first appointment as organist of Winchester College (1598-1602) was followed by a period of service as organist of Chichester cathedral. The story of his slow demise during his years at Chichester has been well documented but he was finally dismissed from the service of the cathedral in 1617 before seemingly spending his last years in London, where he may have been a Gentleman Extraordinary of the Chapel Royal. Weelkes has long been acclaimed as one of the greatest of all English madrigalists, whose best work is of European stature, but patient research into his church works during recent years has shown many of them to be worthy of equal merit. His full and verse services regularly show his prowess as a contrapuntalist, whilst his full anthems are of high quality: Hosanna to the Son of David, for example, vividly displays the his ability to transfer the dramatic excitement he often generated in his madrigals into his religious music. Many of the verse anthems are sadly incomplete, but expert reconstructive work by Peter James has resulted in a convincing performing edition of Christ rising again
