The Elk (Cervus canadensis), also known as Wapiti, are among the most gregarious deer species and some of the largest terrestrial mammals in North America and Central/East Asia. • With an average length of 8 feet (2m43), an average shoulder height of 5 feet (1m52), and impressive antlers on their heads, the males - called bull elk - are some of the most majestic and iconic creatures in the animal kingdom. • Their antlers, which typically have about six tines, are shed each year in March. After that, they begin to grow anew in May in preparation for the late-summer breeding season. With a growth rate of up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) per day, the bones that make up antlers are some of nature's fastest-growing tissues. • Bull elk also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations that establish dominance over other males and attract females. • These vocalizations are made up of two notes in one, with a resounding roar beneath every whistle. That is the reason why such large animals can produce such high-pitched sounds. To me, it sounds like whistles are accentuated overtones of a low fundamental frequency: the roar. • Last but not least, I am not an expert on Foley art, but it looks like the sound engineers of The Lord of the Rings used the bugles of bull elk to create the terrifying Nazgul screams. What do you think? • Transcription: ‪@AlexanderLiebermann‬ • Video: @desert_edge_trailcams (IG), ‪@Photoguide‬, ‪@HarryCollinsPhotography‬, ‪@WildlifeOnVideo‬, The Lord of the Rings, dir. by Peter Jackson (NLC, 2003) • #music #transcription #elks #musictheory #musiccomposition #eartraining #harmony #elk
