Designated the Godfather of Punk , he was the vocalist and lyricist of proto-punk band The Stooges, who were formed in 1967 and have disbanded and reunited many times since. • Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, including garage rock, punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal, art rock, new wave, jazz, blues, and electronic. Though his popularity has fluctuated through the years, many of Pop's songs have become well known. In 1990, he recorded his first and only Top 40 U.S. hit, Candy , a duet with B-52's singer Kate Pierson. • Although Pop has had limited commercial success, he has remained both a culture icon and a significant influence on a wide range of musicians in numerous genres. The Stooges' album Raw Power has proved an influence on artists such as Sex Pistols, the Smiths, and Nirvana. His solo album The Idiot has been cited as a major influence on a number of post-punk, electronic and industrial artists including Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Joy Division. He was inducted as part of the Stooges into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In January 2020, Pop received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. • Brick by Brick is his ninth studio album, released in June 1990 by Virgin Records. It was recorded at Ocean Way (Hollywood) and Hollywood Sound (Hollywood) between February 15 – March 23, 1990 and produced by Don Was. • The album peaked at number 90 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the charts for 37 weeks. • The album gave Pop some of his strongest reviews since his David Bowie collaborations, and Candy , with the B-52's vocalist Kate Pierson, became his first MTV hit. The video for the song found fairly heavy rotation on that station. • Candy is track four from the album written by Iggy Pop. It was released as a single on September 19, 1990 on the Virgin lanel. • Candy is a duet with Kate Pierson of the B-52's, which became the biggest mainstream hit of Pop's career, as he reached the top 40 in the United States for the first and only time. The song additionally peaked within the top 10 in Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands. I've written one good pop song: 'Candy', he noted. It's a very decent, proper pop song, but that's as far as that went. • In 2008, the song was ranked number seven on Spinner.com's list of the 10 best duets ever, and number 14 in Retrocrush's list of the 25 greatest duets of all time. • According to Pop, the lyrics refer to a teenage girlfriend, Betsy: • “I was looking back on my relationship with her, and I thought 'Let's be fair. Let the girl have her say.' I wanted a girl who would sing with a small-town voice, and Kate has a little twang in her voice that sounds slightly rural and naïve”. • • Lyrics • [Spoken: Iggy Pop] • It's a rainy afternoon in 1990 • The big city • Geez, it's been twenty years • Candy, you were so fine • [Verse 1: Iggy Pop] • Beautiful, beautiful girl from the North • You burned my heart with a flickering torch • I had a dream that no one else could see • You gave me love for free • [Chorus: Iggy Pop] • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • All my life, you're haunting me, I loved you so • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • [Post-Chorus: Iggy Pop] • Life is crazy • Candy, baby • [Spoken: Kate Pierson] • Yeah, well it hurt me real bad when you left • Hey, I'm glad you got out, but, but I miss you • [Verse 2: Kate Pierson] • I've had a hole in my heart for so long • I've learned to fake it and just smile along • Down on the street, those men are all the same • I need a love, not games, not games • [Chorus: Iggy Pop Kate Pierson] • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • All my life, you're haunting me, I loved you so • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • [Bridge: Iggy Pop Kate Pierson, Kate Pierson] • Life is crazy • I know, baby • Candy, baby • Whoa-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh • [Chorus: Iggy Pop Kate Pierson] • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • All my life, you're haunting me, I loved you so • Candy, Candy, Candy, life is crazy • Candy, baby • Candy, baby • Candy, Candy • [Chorus: Iggy Pop Kate Pierson] • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • All my life, I'm waiting for your loving so • Candy, Candy, Candy, I can't let you go • [Outro: Iggy Pop] • Candy, baby • I can't let you go
