Many also contain added oils, artificial sweeteners, bisphenol-A (BPA, used to make plastic), pesticides, or other contaminants with links to cancer and other health conditions. • High doses can cause increased bowel movements, nausea, dehydration, bloating, cramps, reduced appetite, fatigue, and headache. • Protein shakes are meant to supplement your diet occasionally and not to be used daily or replace whole foods. If you’re going to use protein shakes, consider making your own. • To make your protein powder, start with a protein base. Oats will add more protein, fiber, and help thicken a smoothie. • For extra protein and fiber, add ⅓ cup chia seeds, ground flaxseed, sesame seeds, or hemp hearts. • Chocolate flavor two tablespoons cocoa (or cacao, or carob) powder. • Vanilla flavor, use ½ teaspoon liquid vanilla, the scrapings of ¼ of a vanilla bean, or ½ teaspoon vanilla powder. • Coffee flavor, add one tablespoon instant espresso powder. • Fruit flavors, add dried fruits of your liking to the mixture. • Grind the mixture until it becomes a smooth powder. Store the protein powder in an airtight container or jar and store in the fridge.
