3 movements from Ayrs for the Violin • 0:06 Alemanda (violin, cello, harpsichord) • 4:02 Aria: Allegro (violin, cello, chitarrone) • 5:20 Aria: Gavotta (violin, cello, chitarrone) • Nicola Matteis was one of the earliest Italian violinists to have made a career in London. On the cover page of one of his published works, he describes himself as the Neapolitan ( Napolitano ). Some scholars regard him as the composer who shifted the English school away from the formal, French style of the Versailles court towards a more casual and free style of Italian chamber music. These short pieces are similar to the later, more developed, trio sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli and Antonio Vivaldi. The four volumes of the Ayrs for Violin are as much a compilation of music as it is a pedagogical tool for informing the public about performance practices of the period. For example, the dynamics, trills and slurs are all precisely notated. • I obtained the original MIDI files from Bojopigeon's uploads at Musescore.com. I adjusted some of the trills and added additional continuo instruments. • Descriptions of the photos: • 1. Violin score from Alemanda, Nicola Matteis, Ayrs for the Violin, London, 1676 • 2.
