The U.S. Army Strings perform a show entitled “Beacon of Hope.” • Featured Musicians: • SGM Tom Fowler, Element Leader, bass • MSG Marlisa Woods, Strolling Strings Leader, violin • MSG Beth Walenta, viola • SFC Matt Evans, violin • SSG Catherine Gerhiser, violin • SSG Hrant Parsamian, cello • SSG Jan Knutson, guitar • With special guests: • SGM Cristal Rheams, vocal, Downrange • SFC Kristopher Keeton, cajon, Concert Band • 0:38 “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” • music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Yip Harburg • Voted as the greatest song of the 20th century by the National Endowment for the Arts and Recording Industry Association of America, Judy Garland made “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” famous with her performance from “The Wizard of Oz.” • This arrangement by Sgt. Major Manuel Bobenrieth, is a standard piece for the Army Strolling Strings. The nimble ensemble performs in ballrooms for hundreds of soldiers and their guests in their dress uniforms, outdoors for celebratory barbecues, and in a 4-star general’s dining room as he hosts visiting nation’s military leaders. • 3:44 “It Might As Well Be Spring” • Richard Rodgers • This next tune was composed by Richard Rogers for the musical, “State Fair”. This is a fun and upbeat instrumental version of a song Frank Sinatra recorded, “It Might as Well Be Spring.” • 13:53 “Hoe-down” from Rodeo • Aaron Copland, one of the most popular American composers, wrote “Hoe-down” for the ballet “Rodeo.” Copland took an archival recording of a fiddle tune and arranged this exciting version for a full string ensemble. This piece sounds unmistakably American and captures the optimism and pioneer spirit of the American people. • 17:05 “Moon River” • Henry Mancini • Composed by the renowned film composer Henry Mancini, “Moon River” is a classic song from the 1961 movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. The record won Grammys for Song and Record of the Year in 1962. • 19:48 “Wave” • Antonio Carlos Jobim • This bossa nova classic by Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, is a favorite for the strings to perform. This fun and evocative arrangement of “Wave” by former member Alex Smith, has been in the Army Strolling Strings repertoire for years. • 21:58 “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” • Dolly Parton • With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” came out of a difficult time in the songwriter’s life. The beginning of the song is somewhat somber and contemplative, but the figurative clouds lift and it ends with a fun and celebratory feel. • 25:43 “Goin’ Home” • Antonin Dvorak • In 1893, Czech composer Antonin Dvorak wrote his “New World Symphony”, inspired by African-American spirituals and Native American melodies from his time in America. The opening lines from the second movement is one of the most beloved melodies of all time. Dvorak’s pupil, W.A. Fisher put words to this melody to create the song “Goin’ Home”, which has been played at State Funerals and memorial services. • Fun Facts: • Do you know which non-stringed instrument used to be in the Strings Element? • Every member of the Strings element, as you might expect, plays a stringed instrument. However, before guitarist SSG Jan Knutson joined the group, there was an accordion player. The accordion served a similar function as the guitar by creating a harmonic base and structure for the rest of the ensemble. • Where did members of “Pershing’s Own” go to school? • The best music schools in the country are well represented in “Pershing’s Own.” For instance, three members on stage for this performance (Master Sgt. Beth Walenta, Staff Sgt. Hrant Parsamian, and Staff Sgt. Catherine Gerhiser) attended The Juilliard School of Music. • • ► SUBSCRIBE: • / @usarmyband • ► ARMY OPPORTUNITIES: • https://goarmy.com • Follow Pershing's Own: • Website: https://usarmyband.com • YouTube: / usarmyband • Instagram: / usarmyband • Facebook: / usarmyband • Twitter: / theusarmyband • Discord: / discord • Flickr: https://flickr.com/usarmyband • • #ArmyStrings #StrollingStrings #Mancini
