It has one of its own natural wonders – the Sesriem Canyon. Do you know where the name of the settlement originates from? • Sesriem is often only thought of as just a gateway to the famous and amazing Sossusvlei, but it is also home to the Sesriem Canyon. • About 4.5km from the entrance of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, you will find unique Namibian story….. you see, the Sesriem Canyon is the second most important tourist attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. It is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab river in the local sedimentary rock. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means six rawhide thongs . This name was given by settlers on the Dorsland Trek who had to join six such thongs in order for a bucket to reach the water.
