The Thillana gets off to a brisk start with crisp Jathis and Swarams, lyrical sounds that match the rhythms of the rain. The lyrics that follow draw inspiration from the saint poetess Andal’s Thiruppavai, a collection of thirty verses in Tamil, in praise of Lord Vishnu. The lyrics of the fourth verse of the Thiruppavai are of special significance here, where Andal appeals to the rains for showering just the right amount for life to flourish. The Thillana rendition ends with a round of fast-paced improvisations. • Composed nearly a decade ago by Sindhuja, with Tamil lyrics by Viji Bhakthavatsalam, this thillana has now come alive with a rendition by four vocalists Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam , Kamaladeepthi Vempati, Shravan Kumar Ramani and Geetesh Iyer giving it a rich, orchestral feel. The music arrangement by Nagaari is a combination of traditional live instruments – flute (Agastya Sridharan), veena(Kavitha Jayaraman), and keyboard (Ashwin Seshadri) as well as modern electronic and synthesized sounds. • Follow the artists at: • Nagaari • Facebook: / nagaari.music • Instagram: / nagaari.music • Shravan Kumar Ramani • Facebook: / rshravankumar • Instagram: / samnotsama • Ashwin Seshadri • Facebook: / ashwin.music • Instagram: / ashwin_seshadri • Twitter: / ashwin_seshadri • YouTube: / ashsesh88 • Agastya Sridharan • Facebook: / agastyasmusic • Kavitha Jayaraman • Facebook: / kavithajayaraman.veena • Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam • Soundcloud: / sindhujab • YouTube: / @sindhujasmusic • Kamaladeepthi Vempati • / @kamaladeepthi • To feature in an IndianRaga production, apply to be an IndianRaga Fellow at indianraga.com/fellowship • IndianRaga brings together the best musicians and dancers across 60 international cities to collaborate on high quality music videos viewed by millions of people globally.
