Major Mukund Varadarajan AC (12 April 1983 – 25 April 2014) was an Indian Army officer remembered for his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice. A member of the Rajput Regiment, Major Mukund was on deputation to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion when he led a counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the elimination of three terrorists. Tragically, he was mortally wounded during the operation. For his unparalleled courage and leadership in this mission, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration.
