HELLO, BABY: Bring on the babies because spring is HERE! We're welcoming our second-ever southern tamandua pup (lesser anteater) and it's a BOY! This is mom Xena's first baby and second for dad MJ. Xena and her pup remain behind the scenes for a bit, but will return as important animal ambassadors. • ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/SubscribeDallasZooTube • With fewer than 75 southern tamanduas living in AZA-accredited zoos, each birth is a big deal for this species native to Central and South America. Tamanduas face a serious challenge in the wild because of the pet trade industry. Over the past decade, hundreds of wild tamanduas were imported into the U.S. Zoo experts are working together to raise awareness of the plight of pet tamanduas by teaching residents to protect these animals, rather than giving them to exporters. • We continue to learn as much as possible with each new birth so we can protect this species in AZA-accredited zoos.
