Get your BU channel membership here: • / @bitcoin_university • In this video, I discuss the history of the petrodollar system, and how it was used after the ending of the gold standard to encourage demand for USD and US Treasuries. • Saudi Arabia recycled its petrodollars back into US Treasuries, thus helping to keep US interest rates low, even in the face of decades of deficit spending and massive issuance of US government debt. • China did something similar, recycling its trade surplus back into US Treasuries, keeping US interest rates low and thereby helping to prop up US consumer demand (via taking on debt) for more Chinese goods. • That old world is now ending, with countries like Saudi Arabia, Russia, and China willing to trade directly in yuan, commodities, or manufactured goods, thus bypassing the need for US dollars. • As nation-states and their central banks hold fewer US Treasuries, the burden is shifted to the Fed to print money and buy them as the buyer of last resort. • The world will never return to a gold or oil standard, but will instead embrace Bitcoin as the new global reserve asset. • Not investment advice!
