Reflecta Digitdia 6000 Dias scanner Magazin Scanner ( In the US Pacific Image Powerslide 5000 ). Take a look inside a working slide scanner. The Digitdia/Powerslide is a powerful scanner for scanning slides in magazines. It can even scan slides both horisontally and vertically. You do not have to insert all the slides horisontally like in most other slide scanners. This scanner looks like a slide projector, that has just been modified but actually it is quite different inside. The light source moves and the light direction is opposite to a normal slide projector. • Resolution • The scanners maximum resolution is 5000 dpi. However I recommend the 2500 dpi that for a 24x36mm slide is 8,4M pixels. Most older good slides have no more than 10M pixels of information anyway. My experience even with good slides is that, even when zooming in, I do not see any extra detail in the 5000 dpi setting, or downsized 5000 dpi, compared to 2500 dpi. Meaning my good slides have no more than 8M pixels information. • My test with a special test slide with a test bar pattern has shown that • 2500 dpi: 2299-2580 dpi (vertical), 2299-2580 dpi (horisontal) • 5000 dpi: 2299-2896 dpi (vertical), 2896-3251 dpi (horisontal) • The intervals is because more tests was made. • 2500 dpi • It means that the 2500 dpi setting is almost real 2500 dpi where the 5000 dpi setting with its about 2900 dpi is not much higher in real resolution. But the file size of 5000 dpi is four times bigger and the scan time longer. • 5000 dpi • However if you insist on scanning in 5000 dpi but do not want the big filesize Vuescan has a feature for downsizing. You can set TIF or JPG size reduction = 2 in Vuescan. It then scans in 5000 dpi and then downsizes by reducing four pixels to one pixel so you end up with 2500 dpi. You can also downsize by setting scan resolution to custom eg. 3000 dpi. it then scans in 5000 dpi and downsizes. My tests show that Vuescan downsizes in a quality similar to resizing in professional software like AcDsee or Photoshop. • 1250 dpi • There is also a 1250 dpi setting (2,1M Pixels on 24 x 36mm slides), this gives surprisingly good results if just viewed on a tv screen and you dont need to zoom in on details. Visually almost as good as 2500 dpi on a Full HD tv screen because a Full HD tv screen itself is about 2M pixels. • Glass or no glass • Scanning slides without glass usually gives a better result, more detail is visible. It is because the glass often is anti-newton having a structured surface on the inside that interfears with the light. In addition many slides in glass have collected a greasy surface over time. It can and should be wiped away with a cloth on the outside, but usually it is also on the inside. It means for optimal result slides should be reframed to frames without glass, like the Hamafix frames in the video. • Focusing • This scanner has a fixed focus. It means that if your slides are bend or curved they can get slightly out of focus. This is especially seen on slides in cardboard frames. Sometimes it helps to turn the slide so that it curves in the opposite direction. • Conclusion • This scanner is a good and stable unit, the ability to batch scan magazines is unique in the market. The ability to scan horisontally and vertically is very time saving. The quality is good, far better than cheap supermarket scanners and better than flatbed scanners. For pictures in good shape ( falling inside the range of the fix focus ) it is almost as good as the legendary Nikon Coolscan scanners, wich are no more available (but still with visible difference ). • The slide frames used in the video are Hamafix , 2,3 mm without glass . • In this video the slide scanner is working with the cover off - Do not do this at home!. • More info on the scanner • https://reflecta.de/ (Europe) • http://www.scanace.com/ (USA) • Vuescan software • https://www.hamrick.com/ • Made by • http://www.datanord.dk/dias-scanning/ • DataNord Scanservice - scanning af dias - digitalisering af video
