His energized songs and sexually envolking performance style, combined with a potent mix of influences crossing the color lines during a volatile era in race relations, bringing him both great success and controversy. • Here are some interesting facts about Elvis Presley… • Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, relocating to Memphis, Tennessee, along with his family at 13 years of age. His career began there in 1954, together with producer Sam Phillips recording at Sun Records, wanting to introduce the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley, on rhythm acoustic guitar, accompanied by lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, together were pioneers of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. Drummer D. J. Fontana joined and completed the lineup of Presley's classic quartet in 1955, and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who ended up managing him for more than two decades. Heartbreak Hotel Presley's first RCA Victor single, released in January 1956 became a number-one hit in the U.S. Within a year, RCA would sell ten million Presley singles. Together with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records, Presley soon became a leading icon of the new popular sound of rock and roll, his performative style and promotion of the marginalized music of African-Americans led to him being thought a threat to the moral fabric of the White American youth. • Presley made his film debut in ‘Love Me Tender’ in November 1956. Drafted into the military in 1958, Presley relaunched his career two years later with some of his most commercial work so far. Holding few concerts, however, and guided by Parker, devoted much of the 60s to making films and albums, most critically derided. Some of the most famous films were 1957s ‘Jailhouse Rock’, 1961s Blue Hawaii, and 1964s ‘Viva Las Vegas’. In 1968, after a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed television comeback special ‘Elvis’, leading to a longer Las Vegas concert residency and a series of profitable tours. Presley gave the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcast around the world, ‘Aloha from Hawaii’ in 1973. Many years of prescription drug abuse together with unhealthy eating seriously compromised his health, he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate at 42. • Selling over 500 million records worldwide, Presley is recognized as the best-selling solo music artist of all time. Commercially successful in many genres, pop, rhythm blues, country, adult contemporary as well as gospel. • Elvis was awarded three Grammy Awards, receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, inducted into multiple music halls of fame. He holds many records, like the most certified gold and platinum albums, the most albums charted on the Billboard 200, the most number-one albums by a solo artist on the UK Albums Chart, and the most number-one singles by anyone on the UK Singles Chart.
