Juneteenth is Virginia's newest state holiday so to help us understand the history behind Juneteenth we've invited Curators Luke Pecoraro and Kate Gruber to discuss the history and significance of Juneteenth as it relates to this Historic Quadrangle (Jamestown, WIlliamsburg, Yorktown and Fort Monroe). • Kate explains how the Emancipation Proclamation impacted Enslaved People's in Williamsburg in 1863 and why so many of the newly freed African-Americans fled to Fort Monroe or Freedom's Fortress . • Luke describes how the events of June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas resonated across the globe to officially end race based slavery that began at Jamestown Island in 1619. • #Juneteenth #FreedomsFortress #EmancipationProclamation
