LIRR in the late 1960s • Out on the Island. To New Yorker's, that means Long Island. Other than inching along the expressways in stifling traffic, getting there means the Long Island Railroad. The commuter is King on the LIRR. From Penn Station in MAnhattan to Jamaica on the Island and beyond means a ride on the road's ubiquitous Multiple Unit trains, or MU's.
