Even as a 12-year-old, Matthias Melzer knew: I'm going to live up there one day. He assured the previous owner of this so convincingly that he was given the opportunity to take over the tower after her. • Unlike Matthias, his girlfriend at the time, Marit, was not at all convinced by the 200-plus steps to her apartment. But in the end, she was also convinced and Matthias wrote his application for the position of tower keeper that very evening. • Long since married, the Melzers have lived at a height of 42 meters for 23 years and have even become parents there. Even though their son Toni “only” moved into the bell tower when he was three days old. • Marit and Matthias Melzer took on a life's work with the church tower of Annaberg in the Ore Mountains in 1999. Their motive: the joy of their unique work for their town. There is no financial incentive worth mentioning for the regular ringing of the bells. The town and municipality can rely on the Melzers and reward them with a favorable rental price. • The regular ringing of the bells has less to do with power than with technology. Nevertheless, the Melzers take their job very seriously. Matthias Melzer networks in the European guild of night watchmen and bell ringers. He is the only member who is regularly responsible for ringing the bells in Annaberg. • Her apartment is 80 square meters in size: living room, guest room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and pantry. It's not as loud here when the bell rings as many people think. The Melzers' home has been in the public eye for decades and they know that part of their job is to represent the town. Television has also been a guest in the bell tower of St. Anne's Church many times. The challenge during our Room Tour shoot: getting the equipment to a height of 42 meters. The Room Tour team also had to resort to the practical cable winch. Just as the Melzers send heavy purchases or furniture up the cable winch, the camera equipment also had the honor. • Even though the Melzers love their airy apartment in the middle of the city, they also enjoy being down on the ground, in their small garden on the outskirts of Annaberg, where they grow fruit and vegetables and enjoy nature. They don't have to climb any stairs and lightning strikes are not an issue. But they would prefer to live on the tower until old age. At least until they find a grandchild to take over the job. • Ein Film von Rico Wolf (Redaktion), Michael Heinz (Kamera), Gregor Vogel (Ton), Lukas M.
