After achieving local success with the 1983 comedy hip hop single Cooky Puss , Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album, Licensed to Ill (1986), the first rap album to top the Billboard 200 chart. • Licensed to Ill is their debut studio album, released on November 15, 1986, by Def Jam and Columbia Records. The album became the first rap LP to top the Billboard album chart, and was the second rap album to become a platinum album. It is one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records to date and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2015 for shipping over ten million copies in the United States. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. • Fight for Your Right is track seven, written by MCA, Rick Rubin, Mike D Ad-Rock. • The song was written as a satirical, sarcastic jab at “party anthems”. The group indulged in this image with their tongues firmly in their cheeks, but to their disappointment, the joke was lost on the masses. “Fight for Your Right” became a frat house battle cry and the Beastie Boys became synonymous with the lifestyle they were parodying… Soon the Beasties were superstars, thanks to their new fanbase of frat boys they set out to parody. According to MCA, they played into their new roles until they realized that they had become their own joke. They stopped performing the song when they finished touring in 1987. • • Lyrics • [Intro] • Yeah • Kick it • [Verse 1: Ad-Rock, Mike D, Mike D Ad-Rock, MCA *MCA Ad-Rock*] • You wake up late for school, man, you don't wanna go • You ask your mom “Please?”, but she still says “No” • You missed two classes and no homework • But your teacher preaches class like you're some kind of jerk • [Chorus: All] • You gotta fight for your right to party • [Verse 2: Mike D, MCA, Mike D MCA Ad-Rock] • Your pop caught you smoking, and he said “No way” • That hypocrite smokes two packs a day • Man, living at home is such a drag • Now your mom threw away your best porno mag (Busted) • [Chorus: All] • You gotta fight for your right to party • You gotta fight • [Guitar Solo] • [Verse 3: Ad-Rock, Mike D, MCA All] • Don't step out of this house if that's the clothes you're gonna wear • I'll kick you out of my home if you don't cut that hair • Your mom busted in and said, “What's that noise?” • Aw, Mom, you're just jealous it's the Beastie Boys • [Chorus: All] • You gotta fight for your right to party • You gotta fight for your right to party • [Outro: All] • Party • Party
