Mental minimalism has been helping me to reduce clutter in my mind to have more space for peace, joy and clarity. Here are 3 things I do to declutter my mind: • 1. Healthy Habits • When we are physically unwell it's difficult to expect the mind to function optimally. I struggle with anxiety, depression, and stress when I have too much caffeine, eat a bunch of junk, sleep very little, and have no downtime throughout my day.. • Healthy habits go a long way in decluttering the mind. I try to keep my healthy routine simple, uncomplicated, and minimal, which I will talk more about in my next video. • Every day, we are bombarded with sensory information that clutters our mind and affects our mental health. • So I take time away from social media to detach from noise in the virtual world. Whether it is going for a walk, journaling or just sitting quietly these help to declutter my mind and have more space within. • 2. Less But Better • This is a concept I learned from a book I read, The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. Everyday, we are presented with so many options and it is up to us to prioritize which one has the highest value to us and forgo the rest. • I used to agree to several requests out of obligation or guilt. But doing so only led to additional stress and resentment. • It takes a lot of practice to say no. It may mean pushing against social expectations and social pressure. But by saying yes less, this prevents me from being stretched too thin, overworked and underutilized despite all of the running around. • Saying no isn't being selfish. When I say no to a request, I am honoring my current obligations and making sure that I am able to devote high quality time and effort to them. • By defining what is important and saying yes only to what I feel strongly about, I am able to eliminate unnecessary stress and put my limited resources more towards the vital few instead of the trivial many. • 3. The Three Gates Principle • Our mind is never void of thoughts. But we can simply observe and not identify with all of them to reduce mental clutter. • Rumi talks about the three gates of speech and I apply this same principle in discerning which thought to ignore and which one to give my attention: • When a nagging thought comes up, I ask myself these three questions: • Is it true? • Is it necessary? • Is it kind? • If the answer is no, then that thought is not worth my time and energy. • Just because something crosses our mind, it does not mean we should run away with it. And just because we feel something it does not mean we need to react to it. • The more awareness we have of our feelings and thoughts, the easier it becomes to detach from them, over time, with practice. • Our mind is an endless pool of thoughts, and we may have some unhealthy thought patterns, mindset and beliefs from the past that pull us back. • Some old habits and tendencies also contribute to our inability to focus and constant state of stress. • By practicing mental decluttering, I am able to weed out non essential habits, activities, and mindset that no longer serve me. As a result, I have more internal space for peace, calm, joy and clarity. • Thank you for watching this video and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
