The dire wolf is an extinct species of the Canis, which mostly lived in North America and South America during the Late Pleistocene and the Early Holocene epochs. • They mostly inhabited plains, grasslands, mountains, and the savannah biomes. • Dire wolves were extremely potent predators, capable of preying on most megaherbivores, including ground sloths, horses, bison, camels, and mastodons. • Similar to today's wolves, they were believed to be pack hunters. The dire wolf was even bigger than the largest modern gray wolf of the present time. They stood about 2.6-2.8 feet tall (80-85 cm) and weighed about 130-150 pounds (60-68 kilograms). On top of being fierce animals, they were also extremely resilient, which is a big reason why there are fossils of them from Alaska to Peru and even further down, with a few of them having been found in Bolivia. • • American cheetah • • The American Cheetah includes two very different species, (Miracinonyx trumani and Miracinonyx inexpectatus). These species lived in North America about 2.6 million to 12,000 years ago and were originally known from fragments of skeletons, but nearly complete skeletons have been recovered from Natural Trap Cave in northern Wyoming. • • Like modern cheetahs, the American cheetah hunted by chasing fast mammals, including prehistoric horses and deer. • Miracinonyx trumani and Miracinonyx inexpectatus were quite morphologically different from one another. • Miracinonyx trumani was similar to a modern cheetah and may have been capable of reaching speeds of over 50mph. • On the other hand, Miracinonyx inexpectatus was built more like a cougar than a cheetah, (although its skeleton was slightly thinner). As a result, Miracinonyx. inexpectatus was much faster than a cougar • • Body mass was typically around 150 pounds (70 kg), with a head-and-body length of 67 in (170 cm), tail length around 36 in (92m), and a shoulder height of 33 in (85 cm). Large specimens could have weighed more than 209 pounds (95 kg). • • The reason why American cheetah became extinct is not clear, but scientists think factors like climate change, competition for food from humans, may have played a role. • • So, which of these incredible prehistoric animals do you think would win?
