Biology 201 Lecture Video Covering Chapter 11.1 of OpenStax Biology Summary: • Meiosis is a special cell division that reduces the ploidy number • Happens in two stages: Meiosis I and Meiosis II • During Prophase I recombination (crossing over) occurs, creates new combinations of alleles • During Metaphase I homologous chromosomes are “independently assorted” giving each gamete a different combination • Meiosis II is similar to mitosis but there is no duplication of genetic material beforehand • Reduces ploidy • 4 haploid cells formed by meiosis • Sexual reproduction relies on reducing the ploidy. Haploid gametes fuse together to reform a diploid zygote • • Lecture Presented by Dr. Ben Burrows for the College of Eastern Idaho • Course BIOL 201 Intro Biology • #biology #meiosis #genetics
