Today I'm going to talk about what is suggestopedia. So suggestopedia falls into the language teaching methods and approaches. Some other ones are like grammar-translation, the communicative approach, and things like that. So this is just another one of those methods. • It was developed in the 1970s by an American psychotherapist Georgie Lizanov. I'm sorry I don't know the pronunciation of his name, but we'll flash it up on the screen for you to see. It's also known as the positive suggestion method or Desuggestopedia. The main tenet of this approach is that you want to create kind of a playful atmosphere and student comfort is of the utmost importance. If people are on edge, they feel nervous, they feel anxious, and they're not going to be able to learn a language effectively. The teacher needs to do everything they can to kind of create a positive, friendly, upbeat, and fun atmosphere in the classroom. • There are kind of a few main steps. The first one is deciphering. That's where the teacher introduces grammar and vocabulary and the students try to decipher or understand what the teacher is presenting. And then the next step is there will be music playing in the background and the teacher will be reading a text and the students will be following along in the text while listening to music. The music is just to kind of create a more relaxing friendly environment for this to happen. • Then some of the next steps are kind of the production ones. In elaboration and production, students learn or use what they have learned in the class. Okay, that is about it for Suggestopedia. That's a very brief overview. • Please let me know if you have any more specific questions or want to know more about it in the comments below and I'm happy to answer that. Also, check out my blog post. I have an overview of all the language teaching methods and approaches and that's about it. • Timestamp for What is Suggestopedia? • 0:00 Intro • 0:06 What exactly is suggestopedia? • 0:20 The history of suggestopedia • 0:35 The main tenant for suggestopedia • 0:56 Steps for Suggestopedia • 1:34 Outro • Tags: Suggestopedia Language Learning Method, Suggestopedia, Suggestopedia teaching, approach in teaching, approach method and technique in teaching english, approaches and methods, what is language teaching, approaches to language learning, method of language teaching, english approach, english teaching methodology, techniques of language teaching, english teaching methods, teaching methods in english, approach in teaching english,
