The song is taught in standard tuning key of G without the capo. • This lesson is taught without tab in hand but I tabbed out the instrumental parts (intro, two solo's and the endtag), you can see that in this video. • • Southbound - Instrumental part as tab... • I will send you the tab for a donation of your choice https://www.daddystovepipe.com/donati... • The accompaniment behind the vocals is explained in this video at 11:33 and is virtually the same as the intro. • I learned this song when I was really young from the album Doc and Merle Watson - Live Vanguard Records. • I've always been touched by the story behind it. Merle Watson accompanied his father at a very early age (16 I believe) and wrote this song when on the road, far away from his home and loved ones. The loneliness really inspired him to write such a simple, yet beautiful song. Merle wrote this song after meeting Mississippi John Hurt at the Newport Folk Festival and the guitararrangement really shows this. • The LP live version, Doc and Merle • • Southbound • A later live version of Doc Watson with Jack Lawrence on second guitar • Doc tells the story how the song came to be. Nice closups of his hands. • • Doc Watson 1991 Southbound • LYRICS • I've been here a month or more, stuck in this old city • The people that have to call it home they're the ones I pity • Lord, I'm homesick, the blues are the only songs I ever seem to pick • I get out and walk the street 'til I get blisters on my feet • I'm southbound • I'm all right 'til late at night I'm sitting by my window • Counting sheep but I couldn't sleep for listening to that train blow • Lord I begin to pine when I hear that engine rolling down the line • I'm going back home to spend some time where I can have fun if I ain't got a dime • I'm southbound • Southbound! She's burnin' the ground and I don't mean maybe! • Sure I'm glad I caught this train cos I'd like to see my baby - • Lord I'm lonesome, I want to see those hills where I come from • Listen to the engine rattle and roar, taking me back home once more! • I'm southbound
