A playthrough of Gametek's 1991 NES game, Harlem Globetrotters. • The Harlem Globetrotters - does anyone remember these guys? As ambassadors of goodwill both at home and abroad, they used to be quite the cultural phenomenon in their iconic red, white, and blue threads. They'd do exhibition and charity games known for being livened up with all sorts of fun antics and hi-jinx, they starred in a cartoon, and were often held up as positive role-models. In essence, they were not about competition, massive salaries, and trash talk - they were all about good-natured fun and spectacle. They might still be, but I wouldn't know - I haven't heard about them since the 90s. Do they still perform? • Anyways, the NES game featuring the team did a good amount to keep the spirit of the live performances intact. My favorite part of this basketball game, by far, is the goofy stuff you can do to the referee if you're playing as the Globetrotters. Don't want to face-off for control of the ball? Yank the ref's pants down just before he throws it up, and you'll automatically gain possession! Are you annoyed at how long it takes him to get in place for a free-throw? A well-time button press will knock him flat on his face, sending him skidding across the polished floor. Funny stuff! Just remember, if you're playing as the Washington Generals, you don't get these options - there's only room for one Harlem Globetrotters team here. • The on-court action is pretty fair by NES standards. It's accessible and easy to learn, and things like dunks and fake-outs are pretty simple to pull off. The mechanics all work as expected, and though they aren't quite as responsive as they were in Hoops or Roundball 2-on-2, they still get the job done just fine. One huge plus is that if you have a NES Satellite or Four Score, the game supports four players simultaneously. • The presentation, like the gameplay, is pretty typical for the NES. Everything is easily recognizable, the animation is decent, and everything is super vividly colored: you aren't really given the opportunity to ever forget your playing a branded Globetrotters game. Flicker runs rampant with ten players on-screen at once, but it usually doesn't interfere with the game much. There are some nifty cutscenes to break up the action, and the sound effects are pretty good (well, considering they're mostly made of white noise, as most NES game sounds were). • If you like the Harlem Globetrotters and 8-bit games, you'll probably like this. It's not so different from All Pro Basketball or Double Dribble, but the license definitely lends the game a distinct feel • that will certainly be appreciated by fans. • ___ • No cheats were used during the recording of this video. • NintendoComplete (http://www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! • Visit for the latest updates! •   / 540091756006560   •   / nes_complete
