Brother laser printer stops working with Replace Toner message, even with toner left in the TN-450 cartridge, and how to fix it. The TN-450 cartridge should last for about 2,600 pages. If you get the Replace Toner message significantly before this, you might have the problem described here. • When you insert a brand new toner cartridge, the printer turns the cartridge reset lever to the Not New position, and resets its internal toner meter to Full. Everything works OK as long as you don't disturb the installed cartridge. • However, if you swap new and partially used cartridges, the internal toner meter becomes unsynchronized with the actual amount of toner left in the cartridge. This causes two problems: (1) The toner cartridge runs out without warning (not a big deal); and (2) the Replace Toner message appears and the printer stops working, even though there is plenty of toner left in the cartridge (a big deal!). • To continue using the partially full toner cartridge, you need to reset the internal toner meter to the Full state.
