Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) • Ballet Suite No. 1 • (Original version first performed in 1947 by the • USSR Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by • Alexander Gauk)* • 1. Waltz in G minor • 2. Dance • 3. Adagio* • 4. Polka Pizzicato • 5. Lyrical Waltz in F • 6. Romance • 7. Petit-Ballerina (Waltz-Scherzo) • 8. Galop in A • *Lev Berezovsky, Cello • USSR Radio Symphony Orchestra / Alexander Gauk • (Recorded in the USSR, 1950's; Classic Editions, 1959) • LP transfer. • *Information taken from the jacket notes of Melodiya C 01427-8: Bolshoi Theater Orchestra / Maxim Shostakovich performing the versions of Levon Atovmyan. The movements of the Atovmyan versions in this 1967 recording differ from those of the 1950's recordings given here. They are as follows: • Ballet Suite No. 1: 1. Lyrical Waltz 2. Dance (Pizzicato) 3. Romance 4. Polka 5. Joke-Waltz 6. Galop • Ballet Suite No. 2: 1. Waltz 2. Adagio 3. Polka 4. Sentimental Romance 5. Spring Waltz 6. Finale (Galop) • Ballet Suite No. 3: 1. Waltz 2. Gavotte 3. Dance 4. Elegy 5. Waltz 6. Galop • James Leonard has also written: Was Shostakovich serious in a light-hearted way or being ironic in a tragic way? … It's impossible to tell. … In arranging the numbers, Atovmyan frequently re-scored them to take the edge off the orchestra, making the music seem more cuddly than it originally was. The result is almost a pastiche, even a parody, of Shostakovich, created with his approval but, still, a virtual caricature of the composer. • see: http://www.allmusic.com/composition/b... • Listeners are invited to reach their own conclusions.
