J Cavness discusses OSHA's training for asbestos work in the construction standard. OSHA requires training for all levels of asbestos work and they separate out that training into 4 classes of work. • The 4 classes are separated by the work being done and the type of material being removed. • Class 1 work which is the highest class of risk in the construction standard requires the most training is defined as removal of TSI or surfacing ACM. Generally what this means is if employees are removing pipe or HVAC insulation, popcorn ceiling texture or fire proofing out of buildings the employer are required to take a 32 hour EPA AHERA training to do the work. • In addition, all the classes of work in OSHA require a competent person. The training for a competent person for Class 1 work is a 40 hour EPA AHERA contractor supervisor training to oversee the removal activity. • Class 2 work is defined as the removal asbestos material that is NOT TSI or surfacing. The level of training for Class 2 workers is only 8 hours. But the competent person is still going to need to have the 40 hours training to oversee the removal activity. • Class 3 work is specific to facilities maintenance personnel. People that maintain apartment complexes and/or commercial buildings. And though the course of their work they are required to disturb small amounts of building materials. If those materials have a small amount of asbestos those individuals will have to have 16 hours of training to do the work. • The 16 hours of training for Class 3 work is the same amounts for a competent person. • Class 4 training is specific to janitors and custodial personnel who come into contact but do not disturb ACM.
