WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR DOG STOPS ON WALKS

Teaching a pup to walk on a leash can be a challenging task if your dog gets in the habit of stopping in his tracks when he doesn’t want to walk/doesn’t feel comfortable on leash. • If not addressed early on, this initially innocent behavior can develop into the issue shown in this video, where a dog will stop in his tracks when he doesn’t want to go on a walk or when he doesn’t want to leave a fun environment such as a dog park or dog beach. • This stubbornness can also carry over into other areas of training and develop into control issues, which is why it’s SO important to tackle this as soon as you can! • If your dog is stopping in his tracks and not wanting to walk on the leash: • Pull on his leash gently to the side while telling him to “come.” • If that doesn’t work, call him to you with a treat. • If neither of the above work, put a harness on your pup and repeat. The great thing about using a harness is that you now have more control and the pressure is no longer on your dog’s neck. • Once your dog walks towards you, reward him with a clicker word “Yes!” and a treat. • Some dogs, however, are more challenging to work with on this and reallyyyy dig their heels in despite any of the methods used above. • In this case, the key to getting your dog to get out of a defensive stance like the one shown in the video (where a dog puts all of his weight into the ground and refuses to move) is to distract his mind and give him direction via another command.
