Don’t ever smoke, whoever you are. • Phil: Where did that come from? • Phil’s mum: [laughs] I hate it! • - • Phil: “I hate the smell of smoking,” says Amy. Yeah, my mum’s got a phobia of cigarettes, which is weird. • Dan: Really? • Phil: Yes. • Dan: An irrational fear of cigarettes? • Phil: No, like, yeah, if— if someone, like, left an ash tray in the house, she’d have to get me to move it. It’s crazy. She can’t go to Damien Hirst’s. • - • “I just wanted to be in the gang, okay? So I decided to…smoke. So we were all sat around. Kyle lit the cigarette; he was like, ‘You ready to be in the gang, Phil? Take it man, take it man, take it, come on, smoke!’ And the cigarette was getting close to my mouth and I was like, ‘It’s gonna happen, I don’t really want to do this, but, erm, uh, ah, uh, uh…SO MANY FEELINGS.’ But that was the moment… my mum opened the shed door. Never in my life has my world crumbled around me as much as that point. I just looked so guilty, and she gave me these eyes. Those disappointed eyes that only parents can do to you. Just like: [imitates expression]. I felt so bad. I kinda feel bad about it now. It was— I felt like I was eating a baby kitten or something. And I was too awkward to discuss it or make an excuse, so I was grounded straight away. One million years, dungeon! In fact, I think I might actually be still grounded. Let’s find out.” • [on the phone:] • Phil’s mum: Hi Phil, how are you doing? • Phil: Good, I was just wondering if I’m still grounded because of that smoking thing from when I was eleven. • Phil’s mum: Yes. Forever! • Phil: Forever? • Phil’s mum: Yes. • Phil: [laughs] • - • “Smoking: • I remember one day seeing my grandma smoking and saying, ‘Hey grandma, why must you smoke?’ And she said, ‘Smoking keeps the fire lit inside my belly.’ So I found that concept terrifying. I thought she was a fire demon. I thought she had some kind of fire creature living inside her stomach for years! I was actually quite scared of my grandma’s stomach because of this lie. Why do adults tell kids stuff like this and then not tell them the truth? Although she always did have freakishly warm hands. Maybe she was a fire demon.”
