From Elvis In Memphis is the thirty-fifth album by American rock and roll singer and musician Elvis Presley. It was released by RCA Records (LSP-4155) on June 17, 1969. It was recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis, Tennessee in January 13 to February 20, 1969 under the direction of producer Chips Moman and backed by its house band, informally known as the Memphis Boys. Following the success of Presley's TV special Elvis and its soundtrack, the album marked Presley's return to non-soundtrack albums after the completion of his film contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Presley's entourage convinced him to leave the RCA studios and record this album at American Sound, a Memphis studio at the peak of a hit-producing streak. The reason was for the southern soul sound of the aforementioned group going by the name of Memphis Boys. The predominance of country songs among those recorded in these sessions gave them the feel of the country soul style. This impression was emphasized by the frequent use of the dobro in the arrangements. From Elvis In Memphis was released in June 1969 to favorable reviews and attracted international attention. It reached #13 on the Billboard 200, remaining 34 weeks on the chart, #2 on the Country Albums chart, #9 on the Cash Box Albums chart, #1 on the NME Albums chart in the United Kingdom, #1 in Norway, #5 in Australia, #9 in France, #10 in Canada, #10 in Netherlands, #14 in Germany, and its single In the Ghetto reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1970. The album sold over 852,410 copies in the US, over 370,000 copies in Europe, over 125,000 copies in the UK, over 60,000 copies in Germany, over 40,000 copies in France, over 40,000 copies in Canada, over 20,000 copies in Netherlands, over 10,000 copies in Australia, and over 1,656,910 copies worldwide at time. In later years, it garnered further favorable reviews, which included the release being ranked #190 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
