After surgery for cancer, or any other surgeries, you are left with a scar. For some individuals, these scars can heal bound down and tight. Some scars can cause pain while others can pull the skin tight and limit your arm or leg movement. Scar tissue is built up around the scar, holding the skin and tissue down. Scar massage can be very beneficial for tissue healing and to allow the incision to heal flat with less symptoms. • ⠀⠀ • First, make sure to allow the incision to fully heal before mobilizing the scar. This can take up to 6-8 weeks. You want to start only on the top layer of this skin and working to deep tissue layers gradually. Massaging the scar for 2-5 minutes at a time is plenty. Using a little lotion without perfumes can also help keep the tissue healthy. • ⠀⠀ • The main techniques and massaging motions we use are: • ⠀⠀ • -Parallel - Massage along the scar -Perpendicular - Massage up and down -Twist - Gentle use your thumb and index finger to rotate the scar • Pinch and Lift For the most benefit, try to gently pinch the skin up and away from the tissue it's bound down to underneath. ⠀⠀ • If you are less than 3 months out of surgery, it's important that your doctor or cancer rehab PT/Physio clear you and see that your incision is fully healed and that it's safe for you to start massaging. Start gentle, and with some time, you should notice a significant improvement in your symptoms and skin health. • ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • //𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬: • Instagram: @cancerrehabpt   / cancerrehabpt   • Website: http://cancerrehabpt.com • My Amazon Storefront: http://amazon.com/shop/cancerrehabpt • Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases • ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • • *I am a physical therapist, but not your physical therapist.
