Are we sweltering yet? Even the box turtles have hit the swimming hole! On a recent and very hot day, SWMLC’s Land Protection team was exploring a property that we may protect in the future when they interrupted a pair of eastern box turtles cooling off in a large puddle. Land Protection Director Kaleigh Winkler captured video of this undeniably cute and sunny little one bobbing around in the water. Box turtles usually spend their lives on land (they’re “terrestrial”), and you can see from the awkward, side-to-side dog paddle that their high-domed shell isn’t really meant for swimming like the low-profile, streamlined shape of a painted or softshell turtle.
