So, today on detransjoy, we will be discussing how can we know the number of detransitioners? • So first, let me explain, it is not the case that when you leave the Transgender community that you would fill out an exit interview like you might for a corporate job. No. You just leave. • So, how can we know the exact number of detransitioners? And is it even possible to count them? We explore this topic today on detransjoy. • I’m about to give you an analogy. So, I have worked in the Software Industry as a Software Engineer and often, in that role, Project Mangers will come to the Engineers and ask for a estimate for a particular project How long will it take to complete it? Trust me, an exact number of days will be impossible to predict because you often don’t know the problem well enough in the beginning to provide such detailed estimate. So, we often use this concept called “T-Shirt Sizing” to estimate effort. Each requirement for the project is analyzed by Engineers to apply a T-Shirt size. T-Shirt sizes are just what you would think. Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. We assign a T-Shirt size to each requirement to convey a general sense of the estimated effort to the Project Managers so they can inform their stakeholders. • So, I am going to argue that we don’t need to know the exact number of detransitioners. We can apply this concept of “T-Shirt Sizing” to convey a general sense of the magnitude of the number of detransitioners. • Here are some things to help us estimate how many detransitioners there are. • Let me point your attention to the number of members in the Reddit /detrans forum. Right now, there are over 54,000 members in this group. Now, this group is described as those who are detransitioners, desisters and those questioning. So, while I do not know the raw numbers of each of those groups, I do know that almost daily we get new victims of Gender Affirming Health Care coming in the group to detransition . Also, it is the case that there are many other detransitioners in other groups. For example, many folks hang out in other platforms such as Discord. Also, do not forget the detranstioners who probably have moved on with their lives and are not participating in any of these groups I have mentioned. • Additionally, this detransition activity is also not new. For me, I detransitioned about ten years ago. So, we had all those people then and each year since then we can add to the total number of detransitioners. It seems to be, this is adding up to a T-Shirt size that is most certainly not Xtra-Small. • So, how can it be that the number of detransitioners being reported by the Gender Affirming Doctor community is so small? They are saying, in fact, that the regret rate is so low, its considered “rare and exceptional” compared to other types of cosmetic surgery • I guess the takeaway here is that we don’t need to know the exact number of detransitioners. It is not necessary to count each one individually.
