Sonification created for the film Rhythms of the Universe, by Mickey Hart and George Smoot, 2013, 360° Productions. • (Please listen over high fidelity headphones to be able to hear nuances.) • To see the film's presentation at the Smithsonian Air Space Museum: • http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/39395730 • See also doi:10.1017/S1355771813000381 • IMAGE: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap990609.html • DATA SOURCE: http://nedwww.ipac.caltech.edu • The intensity levels were mapped to pitch (within a range of two octaves), with the x-axis values representing time. So what we hear is a melody based on the shape of the spectral curve shown in spectral graphs. • Each galaxy has a different timbre for. The idea was to create a kind of windchime in sky. • Inter-onset times are based on differences between spectral components, thus adding a rhythmic element. • Filtered noise creates a background “tint” to identify the spectral region (ultraviolet, optical, infrared, far-infrared).
